1. You must be convicted of the traffic violation before points are added to your driving record
2. Your point total is calculated based on the date of the violation, not the date of the conviction
3. The points for violations that all occurred within the last 18 months are added to calculate your point total.
In addition to any fines, surcharges and points on your license, a conviction for a traffic ticket, and in many other circumstances, could result in your insurance being cancelled (your policy not renewed) pursuant to issuance of New York State Insurance Law Section 3425 and/or your policy premium being significantly increased to NYS insurance law section 2335.Collateral consequences can include:
suspension or revocation of professional licenses, pistol permits, and notary public office
revocation of parole or probation
loss of right to vote, sit on a jury or hold public office
possible damage suits
